Description
A massive mountain of a man, Belshedai tends to give the impression that he's bigger then he actually is. Though he barely tops six feet in height, the broad width of his shoulders and the massive girth of his arms and legs gives others the impression of a large dwarf. Perhaps dwarven blood runs in the man, but you'd never guess it from the joyful smile that cuts the black beard, and the cheerful green eyes that twinkle with some mysterious delight. Ruler-straight black hair, ruthlessly tamed by a leather cord, brushes his neck and shoulders. His beard isn't as robust as some of the other men, but more tamed and pleasantly suited to his rugged face. Belshedai's skin is a husky brown color, mottled in white patches and deep scars of frostburn. He's decked out in light brown leather pants, loosely cut to fit his massive thighs and calves, and a leather vest dyed black that fits nicely over a simply green woolen tunic.

Personality
When the mood's upon him, Bel can be a right quiet man, given more to introspection then boisterous displays. However, like any man, Bel likes his ale and can grow downright hearty with a good dozen pints. Ordinarily, however, Belshedai is a very charming and cheerful man. As a bard, he likes to see happiness on the faces of others, and has a tendency to break into song at odd moments.

Some consider Bel to be almost childishly naive, friendly to strangers and downright hostile individual both. In truth, Bel has seen a lot of hardship and trouble in his days, and considers it to easy to learn to hate and become bitter. Rather then giving in to such emotions, he plans to die with a smile on his face and peace in his heart.

Background
Belshedai is the third son of the noble and proud warrior Shedezai, the protecter of their village and a great man of honor. Upon Belshedai's birth, he was told that many grave and wonderful things happened that fore-told his unique nature. On that eve, a massive warband three hundred strong attacked the village, and above them, within the sky, a star burned so fiercely that the night was as brilliantly lit as the day. Shedezai rallied his warriors, and attacked the warband - and so the legends say - and struck the enemy chieftain dead with a single blow of his shimmering blue greatsword. It is said that at the very moment this blow was struck, the seeress of the village fell as if she had been attacked, and opened newly blind eyes to the world. For an hour, she spoke nothing more then, "Behold, a new branch of the world-tree has blossomed!" It is said that Nomuri, the wife of Shedezai and mother of his children, gave birth to Belshedai without pain or suffering. When the newly born child opened his eyes to the world, not a cry trembled from his lip... but a gentle and peaceful smile.

Though borne under omens and portents, the third child quickly learned his place in the world by the sides of his brothers and his father. Because he was the third son, his training was given to the seeress, for him to learn of her magical ways and the ancient mysteries. Through her tales he learned of the great god-wars, where the ancestors had fought and died for the forgotten gods. At an early age, he mastered the arts of flute, song, and dance. His antics and stories delighted the village, especially during the long and cold winters.

Everything changed on his fourteenth year, when Belshedai and his father were on a hunting expedition, the older man trying to teach the boy even the most rudimentary survival skills. On their journey the were attacked by a hoargaunt, a powerful frost giant mage. Both warriors battled bravely, but when he saw his father die, Belshedai's eyes lit with a savage anger. Catching up his father’s greatsword, Belshedai attacked the surprised giant. For only one second, the giant was open, his guard down so far, that Belshedai found himself reacting instantly; the shimmering blue sword of his father’s flashing out, and driving deep into the giant's flesh.

Instead of the blood pooling and the giant dying, the hoargaunt's mighty fist reached out, casually slapping the child down. "I'm not going to kill you, human... not directly." He bore down with his foot, slightly, snapping the boy’s leg. "The cold will slowly sap the strength from you, leaving you amongst the creatures of the wild. Something will scent the blood, something will come for a taste... probably even before you die. You'll see your own death come at you as you slowly bleed and freeze to death." The giant rose, and slowly began to walk away.

Snarling with impotent rage and weeping for the death of his father, Belshedai still wasted no time. Trying to set his leg without any training was excruciating, but he managed it with gritted teeth and a cold bravery. After this daunting experience, he slowly began to crawl over the rocks and ice, trying to find some place to set up a camp before the cold could sap away all his strength.

A blizzard hit that night, covering the land with a blanket of snow and frost, stealing away his ebbing will. He'd curled up within a small ice-cave earlier, but it did him little good. Without heat to feed the fires of his body, he had nothing. He shivered, his body trying to warm itself futilely. He couldn't feel his arms or legs. His breath came rapidly. He'd heard that death in the frost came quickly... that one simply went to sleep. But this seeping cold was killing him by inches, and he could feel every second of it. His eyes closed, his breath stuttered, and he slowly faded into the oblivion.

Belshedai came awake with a start, scaring the little creature curled against him. Mandibles clicking dangerously, the tiny remorhaz reared back, studying this apparition with confusion, and no small amount of fear. For once in this gods-forsaken place, the boy realized, he had been warm! Warm, and comfortable, with the little beast snuggled against his chest. What on earth had possessed the creature to warm itself against his cooling corpse, when it would have had an easy meal?

Shaking off these questions, Belshedai smiled gently, and held his hand out to the creature. It took some doing, but the remorhaz eventually curled back into him, and Belshedai sighed in pleasure. The inferno produced by the tiny creature was pleasant enough, and it slowly refreshed him. With the young, and extremely vulnerable, remorhaz beside him, Belshedai was able to easily survive the next few weeks, until a search party led by his oldest brother found the boy and the young remorhaz. Explaining the attack, and the death of their father, the party helped the boy slowly move down the mountain.

Today, Belshedai has grown into his power; he has become comfortable with the massive strength that swells in his limbs. But he knows that he is still young, to young and powerless to take on the ancient and powerful hoargaunt that had killed his father. So he travels the land in search of adventure and strength, a calm, gentle, benevolent soul… wanting to pay back a wrong done six years ago.
