Description
Sethrin is a young man with dark brown curly hair that is a dreadlocked, frizzy, untamed, mess, that only gets more wily with each year. His eyes are dark and piercing, especially in the midst of combat. He wears a thin white shirt to prevent his chainshirt from chaffing and a brown tunic over that. Loose grey pants stretch down to his thick black leather boots. most of his body is covered by a thick grey tunic that has a hood which he wears only when the weather is wet or snowy as he prefers to let his hair stand out as a willy and intimidating feature. On his belt he carries a kukri dead center on his back, and on his left hip is a quiver of arrows where his shortbow is tucked in neatly. He carries a spike chain that he often times wraps around his chest, hangs around his neck like a giant necklace but most often carries in his hands. He is a young man, but carries an air about him of mastery of the things he knows, and lets everyone know it.
Personality
Sethrin Moradin, some think he is crazy, and he would lead them to believe just that. He prefers that people think he is not quite right in the head so that he appear dangerous. He likes to intimidate people, to get his way and gain an advantage in combat. He will follow this persona to the end, to the point of saying that Kord himself speaks to him directly. He is not really religous, though he dose use Kord's name quite often, as a tactic to lead people to believe that he is insane. He dose care a great deal about those that are close to him, and will protect them at all costs, putting himself in harms way if necessary to ensure his allies' survival. This only encourages his portral of an insane person who is very dangerous.
Background
. Born to a less than successful father named Roland Del Rio and a pretty yet heavily worn mother named Melina Duro, Sethrin (who hated to be called Seth) was a wild child. He was a constant trouble maker who liked to get into things that should have been left alone for a small child, a quality that was only evaserated when he learned to crawl and quickly thereafter to walk. Setherin's wild ways were more than enough to shy his parents away from having another child. Every day around the small hut they called home was an adventure trying to control his rambunctious nature, and this wore heavy on his mother Melina. . Sethrin had inherited his mothers beautiful hair and though she tried to cut his curly locks on many occasions, he would overpower her with his kicking and punching to the point where she finally gave up trying and allowed his hair to grow wild. He wore it free, unwashed, dread-locked and frizzy, and does so to this day; he lets it become more and more wily with each passing year. This earned him the nickname "Wild Boy" around the village and he enjoyed people thinking he was a little crazy. When people would look at him a little different, deep down Sethrin believed it was fear that lurked behind their eyes and in the back of their thoughts. . Sethrin never took to learning from reading books, he only studied enough to become proficient at reading and writing. While he actually enjoyed learning the language, and was one of the few things that would give his parents a moments peace, it couldn't hold his attention for very long. Once he had become fluent in written common language, they set out to teach him another tongue. Ever since he had come into contact with Dwarves, Sethrin had been fascinated by their militant upbringing and arsenal of weapons, so his second language choice was obvious. . As he studied he took great interest in Dwarven customs and gained a few friends in doing so. While studying with them the Dwarves would teach Sethrin how to wield all kinds of martial weapons and armor: swords, axes, maces, daggers, bows, crossbows, chain mail, banded mail, even plate mail were just some of what were part of his training. He came to use them well, and even the Dwarves were impressed with the nine year old's strength and prowess in combat. Considering his natural talent for fighting the Dwarves tested Sethrin by putting more advanced weapons in his hands, trying to find something that would give him an edge over an average fighter. Of course, the Dwarven Ulgorsh was beyond his skill, but he did take to one weapon: the spiked chain. . He liked the weapon too; in a short time of practicing he learned how to perform dazzling maneuvers with the spike chain, wielding the weapon as if it were an extension of his body, and the Dwarves knew they had found the young warrior's true calling. However, none of the weapons were gifted to Sethrin, for the Dwarves kept their weapons within their own families. Sethrin was already extremely fortunate to have learned how to defend himself from the Dwarves, such skilled artisans of weaponry that they are. So at the end of the day Sethrin returned home with no blade to call his own. His family could not afford to buy him his own weapon (not that they were likely to do so, considering his rambunctious nature). Sethrin longed for his own weapon, and he was a clever boy and would take the opportunity when it did arise. . Sethrin spent a great deal of time when he could in the wilderness. In this time he learned how to fletch a bow and arrows. They were crude at first and he went through several bows, breaking each of them before he managed to fletch a strong short bow. With the bow he began hunting deer and the like that frequented the woods. This was a great relief to his parents, they were always short on money, and him bringing home a fresh deer or fowl for dinner was a great contribution to the family. It turned out Sethrin was a young man of many talents, he was obviously not taking after his father. . On his many trips to the woods he encountered someone he would become very close to. Garret Knuckleberry was a young halfling without a home, he lived around the villge, but didn't have a family to call his own. Garret's mother died shortly after he was born. His father, never recovered from the loss of his mother, and lost all interest in life. One night Garret's father knocked over a lantern and burnt their hut to the ground. Garret tried to pull his father from the burning hut but was not strong enough. So he dedicated himself to becoming as strong as he could possibly be. . On the day that they met Sethrin had stolen his first flask of booze from the local tavern. He ventured out into the woods to get himself nice and intoxicated and found the young halfling over a killed boar he had taken down with a throwing axe. Finding a rugged looking youngster that was actually shorter than him, being that Sethrin was a short boy to begin with, was quite exciting. They passed around the flask of alchohol and cooked up a feast of boar. They became quite intoxicated, howling at the moon and stuffing themselves with the tough meat. . When the alcohol was gone and most of the boar had been consumed, quite a task for two small youngsters, they found that they had developed an everlasting friendship. They had a bond of young wiley boys who liked to get into trouble, which they did quite often. . Garret seldom ventured into Versale, but when he did it was always with Sethrin. They would go to the tavern and steal liquor, and they were quite good at it. Then they would go back out into the woods and inbibe until they were sloppy drunk. Some times Sethrin would spend days at a time in the woods with Garret, neglecting his duties in Versale, but he was needed there and always had a home and job to return to, even if the welcome was less than warm. . Rolland was a man of few talents and little intelligence, he worked for his brother, Sethrin's uncle Reginald "Big Red" Del Rio, in his smithy. They made horse shoes, farm implements and small arms, nothing to complex or fancy, but a small village didn't need those fancy parts a big city did. The occasional weapon order did come through, the dwarves wanting a new heirloom perhaps, a traveler who had broken his blade, but these were rare. When weapons were made it was done by "Big Red" himself, as he would not trust his only mildly skilled borther Roland with such a task. . Money was always tight around Sethrin's home and when he was but seven years old he went to work in his uncle's smithy along with his father. Sethrin learned how to make good horse shoes, but he wasn't a master craftsman by any means. However after he learned how to weild a spike chain from the dwarves he set about making a weapon for himself, he worked late in the smithy slowly piecing together his spike chain link by link. . Uncle Red was proud that his nephew had taken an interest and the inititive in weapon buildig and, for this one project, gave him all the materials he needed. Sethrn kept his unfinished spike chain hiden away in a small box that Red kept tucked away somewhere in the smithy. Red didn't even tell Sethrin where it was hidden, he didn't want him taking it out and working on it when there were horse shoes and plow blades to be made. He even paid Roland for Sethrin's personal work, partly because Roland always needed money, but more so to lead Sethrin's parents to believe that Sethrin was truely putting in overtime. . It took quite a long time for Sethrin to build the spike chain, and before that was done he also built a kukri. It was a thorn in his parents' side to see their wiley son carrying a dangerous weapon, but they tolerated it, after a great many arguments. . Big Red's daughter was a few years older than Sethrin and her name was Annabella, she was quite pretty, referring to herself as exotic, and was allowed little contact with the wild Sethrin. The most frequently they encountered each other was at the occasional family gathering, weddings, funerals (which were sadly the more frequent of the two), and the yearly reunion. However the most usual encounter was when Annabella ventured to her father's smithy to swindle money out of him, which she did quite well. . Sethrin and Annabella rarely spoke, but Sethrin liked to tease her, to which she would turn on him to try and hurt him as he had done to her, however Sethrin was unflappable, he just didn't care. . Now the woods where Sethrin and Garret spent their time were less than friendly. There was a goblin nest there, however it was an unheard of rare event to see a goblin venture out of the woods to bother Versale, still they were there. Garret was very familiar with these goblins, more so than Sethrin, for when Sethrin was absent Garret would watch the goblins, plotting some way to ambush the nest. It was the topic of a great many conversations between Sethrin and Garret, however, they were never so rash as to take on an entire nest of goblins, which was at their young age a wise decision. . However on one day when Sethrin and Garret were still quite young, they were headed into town to pilfer booze from the tavern. They heard a man calling for help whilst still on the outskirts of town. They followed the sounds of alarm and found an old farmer fending off a goblin with his pitchfork. The goblin was a nasty creature and carried a falchion and shield, it was even outfitted with a suit of leather armor. . Sethrin had already made his kukri and shortbow and had learned a great deal about combat from the dwarves. Garret was equiped with a hunting knife, his father's throwing axes, which were one of the few things he had salvaged from the fire, and had developed a rugged almost savage nature living in the woods. Combined with their young arrogance, they feared no single goblin, even one carrying a nasty looking falchion. . The boys jumped into action charging into battle and slew the goblin while the farmer fled to safety behind a hedgerow. Upon slaying the creature Sethrin threw back his head and howled, even though he never touched it with his blade, but Garret remained composed and went about lootig the creature, taking the falchion as his own. He would keep the spoils as his weapon, and it was quite a nasty looking weapon, the blade was large with many jagged edges on a crude wooden handle. He would call the weapon "Big Cleaver". It fit the young halfling though and he guarded it with his life. . The old farmer eventually emerged from the bushes and thanked the boys. Sethrin came right to the point and asked for some ale in return for saving his life. The old farmer took them back to his hut and gave them drinks. Garret was respectful and composed while Sethrin was rude and arrogant, even going as far as sticking his kukri in the old farmer's table. . Later on they would meet the farmer's wife, they were the Ardrot family, Bill and Carol. Their farm became a place to visit on occasion. They would pilfer carrots and potatoes from their fields for their extended stays in the woods, and they did not mind. Some days they would sit on the Ardrots' fence and eat right there and Carol would bring out milk for them to drink. It was a good friendship they had with who they called the ol' folks, and it would be a lasting one. . When Sethrin completed his spike chain, which was far from materwork, he was more proud of himself than he could have ever been, he had made his first real weapon at the age of twelve and that is no small accomplishment. For even though the weapon was rather homely looking, it was quite deadly. Sethrin liked it that way, a crude looking weapon he thought made him look all the more intimidatidating. He carried the spike chain everywhere, wrapping it around his chest or neck, proudly displaying his work, and now best friend. With the kukri on his belt at the small of his back he did look even more intimidating, now only at the age of fifteen he was prepared for battle, trained by the dwarves, outfitted with his own work at his uncle Red's smithy, all that was left to acquire now was his suit of armor, but that would not happen for another year, and he would not have time to make it himself. The Del Rio family was religous about the family gathering every year. Del Rio's from all over would gather in Sethrin's home village of Versale at his grandparents' home in the middle of winter no less. It was a time of great reavalry and jubulation when the Del Rios gathered, an event that was even shared with a great many friends in the village. Sethrin's grandfather was a well respected man named Richard. His wife was named Astell and she was one of the social leaders of Versale. Richard new a man called Applebottom who was from Versale who had a business in Padonis. Applebottom was in need of employees and asked Richard to find him some dependable people. Richard chose his grandchildren, Sethrin and Annabella. Richard gifted each of them money to outfit themselves for the journey, and instilled these words in them, "A good blade can be your greatest ally on a journey, Kord will be with the strong when they need him." That one saying was forever in Sethrin's mind from that day forth. He began using Kord's name whenever he could and claimed that Kord spoke to him directly, though this was not true. With the money Richard gave them Sethrin bought some essentials, a tent and rope, though he needed not buy a blanket for he already had one and felt it was good enough. The one thing he did buy was the chainmail shirt that had been hanging in Big Red's Smithy for many years. It was a loose fit, as it was made for someone slightly bigger than the young Sethrin, but he felt he looked dangerous in it and was more than confident about setting out on the road to Padonis. Now of course Sethrin could not leave his best friend and true ally Garret behind when there was a new life to be had. So well before the date of departure he ventured back into the woods and found Garret in their usual clearing. It was a cold late winter day but the chill in the air that was actually refreshing for two who enjoyed the outdoors. It took very little convincing to coherce Garret into coming along on the little adventure to Padonis, and they returned to the Varsale to make sure Garret had everything he would need for the trip, he liked to be prepared and spent the money he had earned from selling pelts and weeding vermin out of Ardrot's farm. The two were now fully prepared to travel and went to meet Annabella, and she had a few people she wanted to take along on the trip as well. Family Tree
