Description
Zander is a man of 24, but his features still hold some of the roundness of youth. His weathered skin is still the healthy skin of a young man, though his eyes prove his age and then some. Zander has seen much of combat and has been hardened and sobered by it. But that doesn't mean he has no sense of humor. He really is a fun guy to be around when you get to know him, or after he's saved your life a time or two. Just ask the members of the squad he used to, and still, on paper, does, head up out at Manor Garivali. His gray eyes show the things he has seen, but can dance and sparkle almost as easily as they ice over, freezing into hard, steely orbs with chips of black ice for pupils. He wears his black hair cropped shortn about an inch long, and generally sports no real beard, though a scruffy looking shadow of a beard may show up after a couple of days to a week of not being able to shave. Think Jean Reno (The Professional, Oni Musha 3: Demon Seige). He's reletively muscular, but not hulking.

Background
Alexander Rommel, Zander to his friends and Commander Zander or Rommel to his troops, has always been the common man's trooper. He was born to a poor family living towards the eastern outskirts of the kingdom and grew up knowing little more than farming. It bored the absolute hell out of him. He wished for the days his grandfather told stories about, days of battle and honor and fighitng for a cause. His grandfather knew of his young relation's love of the old tales and one day brought him to an old battleground in the forest near the village. Here he gave Zander a gift that had been given him by his father, who had inhereted them from his father when he died. The gift was a beautiful pair of fantastically wrought swords, a short blade and a long one. He began to train under his grandfather's tutelage, but shortly his grandfather passed away and Zander's training was put on the back burner as harvest season rolled around. Later that year, when he was about 17, the recruiters for the local noble house, Garivali, came through his village. They hung broadsheets and posters telling of the glorious life of battle and honor to be found in the service of the House Gaurd. "Interesting," Zander thought... He did some asking around and found the tents where the recruiters that had brought the posters were stationed and requested audience. Alexander's family had always been religiously strict about manners and etiquette and so, though uncultured, Zander was very polite. The commanding officer actually deigned to see him and, in the subsequent interview, almost laughed aloud at the boy's request to formally join the House services at so young an age. But the officer soon noticed the boy's bearing and politeness and the absolute set of his jaw, his utmost determination. The man told him that if he did want to join, he would start off way down on the ladder. "Sir, born where I was and to who I was, I expect nothin' more," young Zander told him stoically. The man asked to see Zander's parents. After conversing with the young man's mother (his father had died of the same ravaging disease that left young Zander slightly crippled), the officer agreed to take him as his personal charge until he was able to enlist. Zander unnoficially started his military career as personal aide to the officer he enlisted under. When the recruiters made it back to the estate of Garivali, he was formally enlisted at the age of 19. He then began basic training and excelled. He loved the physical aspect almost as much as the strict and comforting military discipline. He has since worked his way up through the ranks thanks to impromptu field commands and demonstrated initiative. When the lieutenant commanding his detachment fell in a mad skirmish on the western border, the then-seargant Zander assumed command in the middle of battle and took the company on to a sweeping victory. He continued to hold the post until they returned to Garivalen (the town wherein the Manor Garivali was) by unanimous vote of the rest of the underofficers. When they returned to the town and the seargents all made their reports, the higher-ups decided to just let Zander keep the company and made the field promotion permanent. Officers from other House gaurds would give him hell for not being of noble blood when other House nobles where in attendance, but the soldiers under him would protect his life as their own. They knew him to be valiant, steadfast, and an anchor of the front lines in battle, standing stolidly, his two ancient swords singing, enemy hits glancing off of his heavy armor or just beign absorbed by the almost unnatural toughness Zander demonstrated. Zander definately inspires loyalty in his troops, and fear in his enemies. But though he served several tough years on the brutal frontier, this was not enough to earn him citizenship and, when the new regime of the kingdom began to turn its eyes to secureing its lands, he was recommended by the Lord Garivali to join the Service of the Empire for a time to gain citizenship and learn new tactics. He agreed and has since begun his indoctrination into the military service of the Empress.
