Background |
Gabir Abd al Jabbar and I married when we were quite young, though very much in love. Our parents were happy with the match and we were given land to call our own. Our parents passed in the year of terrible drought and insect infestations. We took over tending their land, coaxing life to grow once again. Our daughters and son worked along side us, when they were not at school. Amina showed interest in herbs and was apprenticed to our dear friend Khalilah in Kaz-Hisshi . Khalilah and her daughter Mushira ran a small herb shop and lived in an apartment just above it. Our daughters were good friends and trained well under Khalilah’s teachings. Habiba married a neighbor’s son and moved into her own home. Our son, Fadil continued to help tend the land, which would one day be his. Our two youngest blessings, Fatima and Jaeda helped with cooking and housework. Though our lives were simple, we never wanted for anything. Our dates and figs were the best around and we had two visits from palace staff personally, a great honor indeed. And then our lives were torn asunder. I went to visit our daughter and friends in Kaz-Hisshi, as I do every harvest season with our mules carrying baskets full of dates, figs, and chickpeas for the market, and to spend a few days with Amina, Khalliah, and Mushira. To my horror I found the shop and apartment in ruin, fire had devoured everything. No one nearby could say for sure what happened to the women living there. I hurried back home, only to find that all of the farming families had been taken away to debtors prison for back taxes and the farms taken over by royal guards. Our homes were all a flame and so I fled back to the city. Once there I sold all of our crops and mules, hoping to have enough coin to survive on until I could plan what to do next. I did not know anyone else in the city, and so I walked aimlessly, down trod and heartsick for my loved ones. A thought came to me as I walked about..Someone may help at the embassy in Rieka. And so I began making my way there. I found a clean, yet affordable establishment to stay in while waiting to talk to someone at the embassy.
